You can save money on your invitations.  Even if you are not crafty you can still purchase a DIY pack (we have invitations from under $2.00) and print and them yourself.

Having the right printer is important as many of the shiny and translucent papers really need to be laser printed in order to stop smudging.  Many businesses have laser printers and you probably have one at work, so ask your boss if you can use the colour or laser printer after hours. 

It would be a pretty mean boss that said ”no” to you.

When checking your printed details for your invitations make sure that you get another pair of eyes (or maybe 2 or three) to read and check your spelling and grammar.  Sometimes you can get too close to your own work and cannot see your errors. A fresh pair of eyes always helps.

Also make sure that you check all venue address details and spelling to make sure that your guests find you on the day.

Invitation paper is expensive so make sure that before you print your wording onto your decorative paper that you do a test on a plain A4 white sheet first.  This way you can check that you have your margins correct for cutting. 

Also check your wedding details, spelling and grammer.  Although you can do this on screen, it always amazes me how many errors you still pick up on the printed page.

Making your own invitations is heaps of fun but don’t leave it to the last minute or try to do it all in one sitting.  After you have made your template, make a list of all the tasks that you have to do to bring your design together en masse.  Make this list in order, from start of invitation making process to finishing touches. Your list might look like this, cut backing paperlayer, cut paper embellishment, cut ribbon, thread buckle, glue paper embellishment to backing paper etc etc.

Do one job at a time, over a period of days or even weeks.  This way you can make sure that everthing is ready to put together and you will not get too tired or stressed.  Remember the old riddle?

The biggest part of making your own invitations is the repetitive cutting of paper or embellishments. I you are individually measuring each page or item for cutting, it is easy to get tired or lose concentration and make a mistake.

An easy way around this is to make a separate paper or card template for a particular repetitive cut, that way you only have to correctly measure once.  You can use the mark on the template to measure and cut your paper or ribbon each time.

I just had a customer in the showroom here at Something Fabulous who has a Norwegian son in law to be.  She informed me that it is an old Norwegian tradition for the bride to make her invitations by hand to invoke good luck and good attendance at the wedding.

I wonder if it is OK the get the groom to do the glueing!!
